Students will leave this course with a strong understanding of the fundamentals of flat patternmaking including how to draft a basic block, skirts and trousers.

20% - Attendance
20% - Assignment 1: Basic Block pattern with 3 alterations made (muslin)
20% - Assignment 2: Garment with 3 patterned elements from class (muslin)
40% - Assignment 3: Modern Suitcoat (lightly tailored)

- Grainlines and why they are important in patternmaking. How fabrics are woven, how to find the grainline, how to cut a pattern on grain.
- Intro to flat patterning: What is a pattern? What does a perfect pattern have? What pattern annotations mean, how a flat pattern compares to the 3 dimensional garment,
- Introduction to a sloper: What is a sloper? How to follow a draft - Demonstrate creating a basic block
- Basic Blocks - In class development of personal basic blocks (measure eachother or work from standard measurements)*
- Basic Blocks continued - Review flat patterns, prepare fabric for cutting begin sewing basic blocks
- Basic Blocks continued - Finish sewing basic blocks and fit them - either on eachother or on a mannequin* - Marking changes on patterns
- Pattern manipulation - Moving darts and fullness around
- Adding ease, and adding fullness into a garment - Assignment 1 Due
